The app and site is designed to pair volunteers with local non-profits in need and to provide local judiciaries with a matching service to those tasked with community service requirements.

The problem:

Prospective volunteers struggle with finding volunteer opportunities, whether it be for self- fulfillment or in conjunction with work or school needs or in response to court-ordered community service.

Organizations and case workers struggle with finding and scheduling individuals into service- related activities.

The goal:

The goal of this project is to provide a central location for volunteers, non-profit organizations, and case workers to make connections and avoid the administrative difficulties of documentation, logistics, and scheduling.

Wireframes

Initially, the home page went straight to the Volunteer section (since this was the primary user); after peer feedback, a portal system made more sense. The side bar is static navigation, too, in case the user moves to the wrong section.

Using the exercise Crazy 8s, I drafted some ideas immediately after completing my competitive audit. Categorizing service opportunities, spotlighting orgs and individuals, and designing for rehabilitative services were all ideas generated during this phase.

Mockups

The users were primarily focused upon aesthetics and added functionality; moving to the full hi-fi mockup resolved many of the user issues and worries. The fluidity of navigation through the site (both forward and backward) was appreciated.

Takeaways

Impact:

My users agreed that the idea of a central location is far superior to the seemingly scattered process in place currently. They believe that there could be some more selection considerations, but all agree that this is a great start. It does appear that the users appreciated being heard.

What I learned:

I learned that so many processes that have relied upon “old school ways” can be simplified through technology. There are so many things to consider when people are involved, so a semi-structured approach to finding volunteer activities makes the process less rewarding. A robust selection and logging process should make the endeavor more meaningful.
